The Personality Paradigm
How To Stand Out Online
Disclaimer:
I tried sending last week’s newsletter from Convertkit rather than Beehiiv and it seems that it landed in everybody’s junk mail (the open rate dropped to below 20% from the usual 60+%)
Due to this, I will be reposting last week’s newsletter today, then will be sending out a new newsletter sometime in the next couple of days.
The reason for this is because of what I just stated above, but also because I have something exciting that I want to share with you guys which will be ready to announce in the coming days.
Going forward, I am looking to move from Beehiiv to Convertkit for a variety of reasons that I don’t want to bore you with.
In order for me to successfully move my email list over I will have to put you into a new welcome sequence. I’ll provide more details on that in the next newsletter.
For anyone that did read last week’s newsletter, apologies for the double-up. I just want to ensure everyone gets the opportunity to read it.
I hope you enjoy it, and expect a brand new newsletter sometime in the next few days!
Cheers.
The Personality Paradigm
Sit down.
Open laptop.
Sip on coffee.
Log onto Twitter.
Rub hands together.
Post a cookie-cutter tweet.
"Yup. This one is a banger"
5 minutes go by.
Then 10.
Then 15.
Then 30.
0 likes and 0 comments.
"Why is Elon doing this to me?!"
Have you been here before?
I certainly have.
Heck, this was me for about 50 days straight.
It almost made me want to throw in the towel.
But...
I found the solution.
In one of my previous newsletters "Attract, Don't Chase" I talked about the importance of adopting an attraction-based mindset to life.
Today's newsletter is going to follow a similar theme with a focus on creating content that sparks engagement and attracts your dream audience.
The issues I was facing at the start of my journey can be boiled down to one factor.
My tweets lacked personality.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
Your actions are a form of currency.
Invest in yourself.
Transform your mind.
Take care of your body.Design the life you want to live through consistent action and iteration.
Your potential is limitless.

This is potentially the most generic tweet I've ever written.
It may as well have been pulled out of a fortune cookie or written by Chat GPT (it probably was tbh)
Regardless...
It deserved what it got.
0 likes, 0 comments, 0 retweets, and (hold onto your hats) a whopping 94 views!!!
Lesson learned.
However...
Fast forward nearly two months and I've attracted an engaged audience of over 1000 people.
And when I say attracted, I truly mean it.
I've hardly done any mindless engaging in the pursuit of followers.
And just for the sake of validating that statement, here's this reply to a tweet I recently posted about my lack of engagement:

humble flex*
So what did I change to start attracting an audience to my content?
It's simple.
I started incorporating personality into my tweets.
Or as some of the growth gurus say "I wrote like I was speaking to a friend at a bar".
I really wish I'd done this from the start.
It would've saved me months of tweeting into the void and seeing nothing in return.
Oh well.
Live and ya learn right?
I've learned that the only way to succeed in building a personal brand is by...
...well
Being yourself.
You've heard it all before but...
You are the brand.
You are the niche.
So how have I started incorporating my personality?
Let's dive in 👇
There are 3 key factors that go into what I call "The Personality Paradigm":
Storytelling
Boldness
Humor
Storytelling
This is an important one.
It gives the reader an insight into your life.
Everyone has their own unique story, and it is our job as content creators to share ours.
This is how you stand out.
And you don't have to have done anything amazing.
You can find stories worth sharing even in the most mundane moments of your life.
Here's an example:
I live in Brazil.
The guy at the corner store won't talk to me.
I always thought he was a dick.
But then it hit me...
He doesn't bother because my Portuguese sucks.
Moral of the story:
If you want more engagement, improve your writing.

You wouldn't think that walking down to the corner store to buy some bacon would give you a good story to tell...
But it can.
It all depends on how you frame the experience.
Bonus points if you can provide value in the form of an analogy or metaphor relevant to your niche.
People love that.
Boldness
To stand out, you need to be bold.
This doesn't mean calling people out, or making overly-polarizing statements (I do love to polarize though).
What it means is using vocabulary and formatting that grabs attention.
Avoid using:
Paragraphs
Passive voice
Weak adjectives
Drawn out sentences
Instead, use:
Bulletpoints
Active voice
Power words
Concise sentences
Content creation is a game of attention, and we're all competing for it.
So we need to GRAB people's attention.
Here's an example:
How to get ahead of 99% of people:
- Get rid of all distractions
- Set yourself a HUGE goal
- Zero in on it for 6 months
- Learn high-value skills
- Execute like a madman
- Fail hard, respond harderDo this and you'll become unrecognizable.
Grab life by the balls.

"Grab life by the balls"
I include that in a lot of my tweets.
It brings a sense of energy and taps into the emotions of the reader.
There were several replies to this tweet saying that it "fired them up".
This is the kind of reaction you want to extract from the reader.
Used it again yesterday lol 😏
The balls of life are just dangling there.
Grab them.

Humor
Twitter is a pyramid scheme.
Everyone is sharing the same information and profiting from passing it down to people a few steps behind them.
These kinds of people will only last so long.
It's important to realize that value isn't only provided in sharing knowledge, but also in entertainment.
This is what sets you apart from other creators and helps you build a "personal brand".
Humor is your best weapon for entertainment.
So...
Be bold, be a degenerate, and share your weird sense of humor.
Sure, it might scare off a few followers...
But you'll make back at least double the amount that unfollowed you.
And these people will be like-minded people that will actually engage with your content.
Here are a few examples:
(heck, including these examples, might even get me some unsubscribes - oh well)
Guys help!
This happens every time I have a tanning session…
Does anyone know how to stop sweating so much?

This joke went over a lot of people's heads.
I got a lot of advice on how to stop sweating so much.
But it also got me a ton of engaged followers who share a similar sense of humor.
This is what we want.
And then there's this example:
I'll never understand people who sign up to the gym just to walk on a treadmill.
Just go for a walk?
— Josh Lawrence (@WndrJosh)

Just to make it clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with walking on a treadmill.
(except for the fact you could just go for a free walk outside)
But I thought it would be a funny observation that would polarize people.
Worked a charm.
The key here is to not be afraid to slightly offend people (massive emphasis on the word slightly, it needs to be in jest).
If you're trying to please everyone, your tweets will fall flat.
But if you're trying to grow an engaged audience, you should make content that provides people with something worth talking about.
This is why storytelling, boldness, and humor are your best friends.
That's all for today!
I hope this newsletter provided you with some value, whether that be in the form of knowledge or entertainment.
And if there is one key message that I would like to reiterate it would be to...
Be Yourself.
And finally…
If you are sick of:
Tweeting into the void
Having a lack of clarity
Spending hours engaging
Your follower count not growing
